WEEPING PENITENTS. CRACKING LIMBS. DEMONIC POSSESSION

Presenter: Amy Bosworth, assistant teaching professor of history, Ball State University Pronounced and often visceral evidence of the power of the holy dead and, by extension, the medieval Catholic Church frequently manifested at the shrines of the saints in the Carolingian Empire. These stories, organized by the clergy into “miracle collections” (miracula), validated the veneration of a particular saint, while also teaching valuable lessons regarding proper behavior. This evening we will discuss some of these stories from the ninth century and explore religious belief in early medieval Europe.”Cost: $25 per person, includes reception |
